Both of them feel freezing when you put them on your face, and that’s the last thing I need help with best now. mother nature is taking care of that all by herself, thank you very much. (Side note: I’m wearing the thickest, many unsexy socks best now…but they’re so warm!)

I will say, though… This primer is kinda cool, both literally and figuratively. It’s a tinted, airy, mousse-y foam makeup primer, and like the Jelly Cleanser it just launched with, it has willowherb extract to help with hyper-pigmentation.

It does feel cool to the touch when it first comes out of the can — not painfully freezing cold or tingly or anything, but it is cold enough to get your attention. I find it refreshing, like holding a chilled washcloth to your face, and the effect wears off in about 10-15 seconds.

You work a little on bare skin after washing your face and applying your skin care for the day, but before applying your makeup, and it helps everything you apply afterward (foundation, concealer, powder, etc.) look smoother and last longer.

On my 40-something combo skin, it works as a moderately potent smoothing primer (I can certainly see a difference in pore size when I use it), similar to BECCA Backlight (but without the shimmer), hourglass Veil or MAC Prep+Prime natural Radiance, but not as intensely smoothing as a silicone-heavy primer like make up For ever Smoothing primer or urban Decay urban Defense, both of which fill pores like painter’s putty for your skin.

Overall, I think it works well. My skin looks smoother, my makeup lasts longer, and the tint doesn’t interfere with color products. I’ve tried it with a bunch of different foundation/concealer combos, too, and it layers well with everything. It also feels light.

What I’m not crazy about, however, is how rapidly I’m using it up. I dunno… I feel like I end up putting a lot of it on my face, and it’s hard to tell how much is left in the ($32) can. Judging by the weight, I’m guessing it’ll last me one or two months at the most.

The 1.8-oz. can is $32, which, yeah, is less than a bottle of BECCA Backlight (which is $38 for 1 ounce), but a bottle of Backlight takes me 6-8 months to finish, and that’s with daily use.

This black one is the $20 beautyblender pro, and it’s my favorite. The black keeps it looking cleaner longer, compared to the iconic O.G. pink beautyblender, which is also $20 and also available at MAC. They both work just as well as the other, but the pink one, which is super CUTE, shows off every single product that has ever graced it. It looks messy, and I’m not about that life.

I sure do love the pink ones when they’re new, though.

I primarily use mine to apply liquid foundation and concealer, but I have seen people use them for powders and eyeshadow. I use the larger end of the sponge to cover large swaths of skin, like my forehead and cheeks, and the pointier end for the nooks and crannies, like the inner corner of my eye, and the corners around my nose and mouth.

It’s true, you could use any old makeup blending sponge. There are lots of other non-latex makeup sponges for blending and application, and most of them are pretty good, but I’ve always liked that the beautyblenders are un-textured. When I blend my foundation or concealer, I don’t see a pattern from the sponge on my skin, so the coverage looks natural. Plus, they absorb juuust the right amount, so I don’t feel like I’m wasting much product when I use them (some makeup sponges are too absorbent, IMO).

MAC now carries beautyblenders, and cats everywhere rejoice!
Here’s a trick I use: before I sit down to apply my makeup, I wet my beautyblender with water — like really, really soak it. I completely drench the thing! Then, I set it aside and do whatever else I’m going to do, like my brows, curl my lashes, face primer, whatever, and then, right before I do my foundation or concealer, I spritz it with MAC Fix+ all over to re-wet it slightly. then I apply/blend my foundation or tinted moisturizer, BB cream, etc.

The layer of Fix+ really helps my face makeup adhere closer to my skin, or something, and the coverage looks even more natural. I think it also adds a little extra moisture, and my combo skin is mostly dry, especially now that it’s winter, and every little bit of moisture helps.

Among other things (not all of them natural), this has willowherb and rock rose, plant extracts that are supposed to help with evening out your skin tone and reducing hyper-pigmentation.

Now, would I rely on this product alone to even out my skin tone? Not hardly. It’s on your face for, what, a minute? maybe two? and then you just rinse it off, and in my experience, when it comes to reducing hyper-pigmentation, my best results have come from acid serums and toners that stayed on my skin for an extended period, day after day.

But I like that Origins made an effort.

To remove your makeup with it, apply a dollop of the silky, lightweight gel on dry skin, then gently massage it all over your face (I even use it on my lids and lashes), at which point the formula starts breaking down your makeup. Then, add a splash of water to emulsify the gel into a thin, milky cleanser, and rinse off.

Followup with a second cleanser/face wash.

Between the first cleanse with the jelly and my second cleanse with my straight-up face wash, I usually take a Shiseido Facial Cotton pad soaked with Clinique Take the Day Off Eye makeup remover to finish off any leftover mascara and liner, since the jelly usually misses some bits and bobs.

Overall, this is easy and kinda fun to use, especially when you add the water and it takes on a milky texture. As an oil-based cleanser, it’s also pretty effective, but…(because there’s always a but) my combo skin feels a little dry and tight after I rinse it off, and I still do need to finish with another cleanser.

Plus, I actually like oil-based cleansers that leave behind a moisturizing layer/film, which is something this doesn’t do. especially in winter, when my skin is hella thirsty.

For now, I think I’ll stick to DHC’s Deep Cleansing Oil, which removes everything for me, including mascara and eyeliner (whereas this needs a little extra help), but it doesn’t dry out my skin.
